Posted On: Sep 21, 2009

Group 1 responds to a Motor Vehicle Accident with a Major Haz-Mat challenge.

On Monday, July 6, 2009, Amesbury Fire Dept. Group 1 was dispatched to Route 95 for an MVA and major HazMat situation. Several patients were injured in the accident. Med-Flight transported one patient to Boston from the Anna Jaques hospital in Newburyport.

While attempting to avoid a three vehicle accident, the driver of a 10,700 gallon Gasoline tanker truck lost control of the Tractor trailer unit and rolled-over onto the highway.

The overturning of the vessel caused several thousands of gallons of gasoline to spill. The crews on scene battled to keep the fuel from entering the Merrimack River. hundreds of gallons did find their way into the waterway. The Coast Guard assisted in containing the leak.

Essex County Mutual Aid was used to deploy foam trailers. Several surrounding communities assisted with scene work and station coverage for all the at-work towns.
